Exiting / transitioning from international partnerships: a toolkit for small NGOs

This toolkit, released with four other toolkits for small charities, was produced by INTRAC as part of the programme "Strengthening Small Organisations with Big Ambitions". This programme was funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) through a Small Charities Challenge Fund (SCCF) Capacity Development Grant. Dowloadable PDF versions of all five toolkits are available on the INTRAC website here.

About the author

Lucy Morris is passionate about 'shifting the power' in international partnerships and an organisational change specialist. She has first-hand experience of localising country offices and responsibly exiting from national partners whilst working at EveryChild before the organisation deliberately closed down and transferred its assets to a network of national organisations. Whilst working with the British Red Cross she also advised on partnership and capacity development approaches. She regularly delivers INTRAC’s “Partner Capacity Strengthening” training.

Acknowledgements

This toolkit was designed based on the needs of the small charities that enrolled in the programme "Strengthening Small Organisations with Big Ambitions", and benefitted from feedback from some of them. In particular, the development of this toolkit has drawn insights from conversations with Ruth and Anil Patil (Carers Worldwide) who received mentoring on Exit strategies. Special thanks to Rachel Hayman and Rick James for precious comments on earlier versions of this toolkit.
